What is a Wet Belt?

A wet belt refers to a specific type of timing belt used in many vehicles on sale today. It's called a "wet belt" because it operates within an oil bath, meaning it is lubricated by engine oil, as opposed to traditional dry timing belts that do not come into contact with oil. Wet belts are used in certain Ford EcoBoost and Peugeot/Citroen Puretec engines to drive components like the water pump and balance shafts.

What can go wrong with them?

Premature Wear: One of the most common issues with the wet belt system is that the belt can suffer from premature wear. The constant exposure to oil can cause the belt material to degrade or stretch over time, leading to possible timing issues or even belt failure. Over a period of oil the degraded belt with fragment and work its way around the engine blocking up the most crucial components required to allow the engine to run smoothly such as the oil pump and vacuum pump. Owners may notice the brake pedal becoming firm or an oil pressure light on the dashboard.
